Very nice weekend in Atlanta. I kicked it off Friday night by cooking up a big batch of black bean chili using the recipe from the Grit Cookbook ( This really is a good cookbook, vegetarian or not.  I froze most of the chili, save a bit I’m gonna eat this week. The house smelled like cumin and chili powder for the next day or so. Mmmmm. I wonder if the rock can smell what I’m cooking.

Saturday started off foggy but that burned off by noon or so.  I popped into Urban Outfitters for a minute. They do not get a whole lot of my business but it’s fun to browse. I perused the book table and amogst the books on graffiti and weed, I spotted a cookbook from Baked, a bakery in New York ( . I actually have a recipe from there printed out and ready to go in my oven. I turned the book over and saw it was clearance. “$9.97” Good enough for me! I went to the register to pay and to my delight, it was half off of that. new cookbook for 5 bucks! Then I took it home and drooled all over the pictures.

I had set out that morning to stalk g.s. cookies, as no one sold any at my office. I finally spotted a stand at the CVS on N. Druid Hills so I busted a U turn and hurried into the parking lot. Got my 8 boxes of samoas and set off to find tagalongs. Scored 4 boxes of tagalongs at the next stop and 2 boxes of dulce de leche, which are alright I guess. I probably wouldn’t order them again. Omnomnomnomnomnom. Also worked on the sisyphean task of replacing my fence. I’m about a quarter of the way through the one side and I noticed another side starting to sag / fall apart. It never ends.

Why I'm replacing....

I met some friends over at Felinnis for dinner and decided they needed some cookies. I whipped up a batch of sugar and gingerbread swirl cookies to take them.  Ok, “whipped up” is not true, I made the dough a while ago and it’s been in the freezer but I decided on Friday night to liberate it. Cookies were good, 4 noms out of 5, in my opinion. Maverick ate about 5 after dinner so I guess she liked them. I did see a bunny in my yard when I pulled in the driveway later. Weird.

Sunday was another gorgeous day – took Mr. Bird hiking around Stone Mountain. Sunday’s are perfect Big Green Egg days (really, every day is…) I loaded it up with turkey sausage  and chicken breasts for my jambalaya. I also searched my ipod for “Jambalaya” by Hank Williams but I didn’t have it which was dissapointing. So, I sang it acapella to the cat and the dog and they (rudely) left the room.  Incidentally, I saw that Hank III just put a new album out.  I saw him in concert a while ago, he plays his country band for the first half and then after a short break, comes back out with his punk band, Assjack. That’s what I call a two-fer. Anyways, I pulled the jambalaya recipe from the Joy of Cooking but decided to “clean it up” a little. I used brown rice for the white and turkey sausage (Hot!) for the andouille. It was nomnomlicious. Also cooked up some cauliflower. I have never really cooked cauliflower and don’t know if I will again. It smells like cabbage. Let me give my biased opinion on hot sauce too – The regular tabasco is ok, I don’t care for the green, but the chipotle and the garlic – omnomnomnomnom. Buy it if you like the hot sauces…

I finished the oatmeal cream pies tonight. OMNOMNOMNOMNOM. 5 noms out of 5. I might even give it 6 noms out of 5 because I made the Nom scale up anyways. I ate one bite of one and thought “holy $%!* omnomonomnomnom” and gobbled the rest of the pie. Then 3 minutes later I got a fantastic sugar high and was about to fall asleep in the kitchen standing up as I crashed.  I ended up only eating half my quesadilla for dinner. Also had a few bites of the chili. 4 noms out of 5. Not as good as the Grit’s. Here’s the recipe for the Oatmeal Cream Pie, I grabbed this From
